Promotions & vouchers at a glance

Purpose
Two ways to lower prices — and they differ in who has to do something.
A promotion is a period with a name; it applies to everybody without anybody typing anything. A voucher is a code; it only works once somebody redeems it. Wanting broad effect argues for the promotion; wanting attribution argues for the voucher.
Scope
- Promotions with a name, period and the items or categories affected; they end by themselves.
- Vouchers as discount codes with conditions, redeemed on the order.
- One voucher line per tax rate — so that VAT comes out right.
Interplay
Promotions intervene in price determination, see Prices & units; vouchers act on the order. Calculation happens in the commerce core.
Limits
- A voucher never acts by itself. Issuing is not redeeming.
- Several voucher lines are not a fault but the condition for correct VAT on mixed tax rates.
- A promotion offers no attribution. Anyone wanting to know which campaign worked needs voucher
codes.
- No campaign management. Dispatch and audiences live in the marketing module.
